Parashat Noach (Noah) Genesis 6:9 - 11:32

Maftir - Numbers 28:9 - 15

HafTorah - Isaiah 66:1 - 24

Dear friends,

This Shabbat weekend we will be celebrating Shabbat Rosh Chodesh. This confluence of Shabbat and the new month occurs only a couple times a year and we will observe it with a special reading from a second Torah (Bamidbar 28:9-15) which delineates the sacrifices that were carried out on Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh and a special Haftorah reading from the Prophet Isaiah (Chapter 66). He prophesizes as the Second Temple's reconstruction is nearing completion that the prayers and sacrifices therein will be useless if it is not accompanied by righteousness and reverence for all people and that evil thoughts are dispelled from our hearts and minds. Even though today we no longer have the Temple in Jerusalem, the words still ring ture. Prayer only makes sense when accompanied by good deeds and righteousness. With much optimism, Isaiah concludes with:

וְהָיָה, מִדֵּי-חֹדֶשׁ בְּחָדְשׁוֹ, וּמִדֵּי שַׁבָּת, בְּשַׁבַּתּוֹ; יָבוֹא כָל-בָּשָׂר לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺת לְפָנַי, אָמַר יְהוָה

׃

And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another,

shall all flesh come to worship Adonai.

And this is why we read it on Shabbat Rosh Chodesh!

Our weekly reading is from the portion of Noach in the Book of Bereshit (Genesis), Chapter 11 which tells of the building of the Tower of Babel for the purpose of reaching the heavens, an effrontery to Hashem. Ultimately a myriad of different languages resulted so that communication among the transgressors was impossible. Today, our world possesses hundreds of languages, but we find positive ways to communicate through respect and understanding of others and unfortunately, the opposite stilll occurs where we discriminate against those who are unlike us and live with constant conflict. Our goal is not to literally speak one language, but to communicate our desire for righeousness and peace using any means (and language) possible.

Finally, in addition to our Shabbat Rosh Chodesh services tonight at 7:30 pm and tomorrow (Saturday morning at 9:30 am), I will be observing the yahrzeit for my beloved mother of blessed memory on Sunday morning, November 3rd at 9 am. In order for me to recite the Kaddish prayer that morning, I will need a minyan. The prayer service is only half an hour long and I am inviting all who can come in person to breakfast at Panera's right after. Please inform me if you can perform this important mitzvah so that I can count on a minyan. I will also arrange for the service to be available virtually on Zoom. With much appreciation and wishing you all a Shabbat Shalom and Chodesh Tov; a good Shabbas and a good month ahead!
