Dear friends,
As we are rapidly approaching the festival of Passover, we continue our anticipation on this Shabbat known as Shabbat Parah. Shabbat Parah (“Sabbath [of the] red heifer” שבת פרה) takes place in preparation for Passover. Numbers 19:1-22 describes the Parah Adumah (“red heifer”) as part of the manner in which the kohanim and the Jewish people purified themselves so that they would be ready (“pure”) to sacrifice the korban Pesach.
In addition to our regular Torah reading in the Book of Exodus, portion of Vayakhiel which continues the instructions for the construction of the Mishkan and its contents, we read a section of the Book of Bamidbar from a second Torah which describes the Parah Adumah. The special Haftorah read on Shabbat Parah comes to us from the Prophet Ezechiel and explains how Israel will be purified by G-d, and in fact brought back to life with a new heart and a new spirit.
All of the readings and customs of these special Shabbat observances help us to intensify our preparations for Passover. After this Shabbat, Pesach will only be three weeks away! So, let's continue to gather as a community on this Special Shabbat Parah this evening at 7:30 pm when we will have specially prepared coffee and desserts served after services and tomorrow, Saturday morning at 9:30 am as we celebrate the beginning of the Spring season. Also, please sign up soon for our unique daytime Seder which will take place after morning services on the first day of Passover, Sunday, April 13th.
